What are The Baby Blues?
’Baby Blues’ is a period of mild depression which affects new mothers, usually starting 3 or 4 days after baby is born. Baby blues is common, affecting up to 80% of women. It is thought to be due the pregnancy hormones leaving your body.
Symptoms of Baby Blues
- Increased tearfulness for no apparent reason
- Tiredness
- Irritability
- Feeling sad; or mood swings
- Feeling anxious
- Worrying excessively about minor problems
- An overwhelming sense of responsibility
- Unable to sleep
The symptoms tend to be at their worst on day 4 or 5, but usually gets better by themselves, and should only last a matter of days. However if your symptoms last more than 2 weeks then you should seek help. Describing all your symptoms will help to make a diagnosis.
